Lighthouse Notes

Built in 1879, this screw pile lighthouse, measuring 41 feet high, was constructed to help navigate the crooked, narrow channel of Hooper Strait which accesses the Tangier sound in the norhter part of the Chesapeake Bay. The Lighthouse was decommissioned in 1954 and replaced by a modern, cost-effective beacon. Rather than be demolished, the lighthouse was transported to Navy Point in St. Michael's, Maryland. It now servers as a favorite attraction at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, preserved as a living lighthouse.
